Nitrous oxide, also referred to as laughing gas, is a sedative option that offers light sedation for mild to moderately anxious patients, or anyone who may benefit from feeling calmer during their visit to the dentist. Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask that is worn over the nose, allowing you to breathe in a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide. This helps you to relax and allows you to remain comfortable and calm during your dental treatment, reducing your overall anxiety and stress. Effects occur almost immediately and diminish quickly once the mixture is no longer being inhaled.

Oral sedation offers light to moderate sedation to anxious patients. It is administered by taking one or two prescribed pills of a sedative medication prior to a procedure or appointment. Oral sedation is strong enough to bring about a feeling of sleepiness without putting you to sleep, resulting in a more relaxed state and ultimately helping to alleviate anxiety or stress. An initial dose is taken about an hour before your appointment and, if necessary, an additional dose may be taken the night before a procedure to help with any anxiety-related insomnia.
