Oftentimes teeth grinding happens unconsciously while awake or while you sleep, so it can be very difficult to stop. Monarch Landing Dental is pleased to offer custom-made dental appliances to help with your bruxism. These plastic removable mouthguards, or bruxism appliances, are typically worn over your upper teeth, helping to minimize friction between your jaw to prevent it from clicking and grinding. This in turn helps to alleviate your TMD symptoms and also helps to protect your teeth from the physical wear and tear that often happens from grinding. Bruxism mouthguards accomplish this by providing a cushion for your teeth, so that rather than wearing down your enamel you bite against the appliance and wear the appliance down instead of your teeth. It is important to keep in mind that bruxism mouthguards are not a cure for grinding, and as long as the grinding continues, some symptoms such as jaw pain may not change.

Custom-made sports guards are more comfortable and easier to wear compared to general over-the-counter options. More importantly, a properly fitted custom-made sports guard can effectively absorb the shock of impacts and protect your teeth from potential cracks, chips, knockouts, fractures and oral damage. It is very important that those who wear braces or other fixed orthodontic appliances wear a sports mouthguard because any impact to the mouth can damage the brackets and wires on your braces in addition to causing additional tears and cuts to the soft tissue inside of your mouth.
